About the Book

Rick Allen’s F ’n’ A!, My Crazy Life in Rock and Blues is the autobiography of a true musician.

The book’s title, F ’n’ A! (two of Allen’s favorite keys on piano and organ), could also mean “Fun and Adventure,” “Frustration and Achievement,” or street slang for a vehement “Hell Yeah! I’m gonna play music till my clock runs outta time!” The last definition fits his book best of all.

From a very young age, Rick Allen felt drawn to the keyboard, creating a relationship that has endured the ups and downs of his life. Every encounter he’s ever had, since first watching his grandmother play piano, has led him to the life he felt uniquely destined to live––to an astonishing talent and a love of rock, blues, and R&B that made him a fulfilled man and musician.

This book tells the tale of a man who was so engrossed in his music that he would, from time to time, starve in cheap motel rooms because he’d run out of money between gigs. His most defining moments were spent on stage, playing for thousands of people at Madison Square Garden and other major venues; his worst moment was a night spent in jail, recovering from drug-induced insanity. Allen has played onstage with popular musicians such as Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Delaney & Bonnie, Dr. John, Sonny Boy Williamson, and more. He has also toured with Loggins & Messina, The Doobie Brothers, The Beach Boys, and Rod Stewart. But overall, this book tells the story of a musician’s triumphs and tragedies, along with his joys and heartbreaks, all interlaced with absolutely crazy, “grab your ribs with laughter” events that could only happen in rock and roll bands.
